dua for new clothes

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Clothing is a blessing from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). It protects the body, gives dignity, and reflects modesty.

Islam emphasises both inner and outer cleanliness, and wearing garments is part of honouring that principle. The Quran highlights this in Surah Al-A’raf (7:26):

Transliteration: yābanī ādama qad anzalnā ʿalaykum libāsan yuwārī sawātikum warīshan walibāsu l-taqwā dhālika khayrun dhālika min āyāti l-lahi laʿAllah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ)um yadhakkarūn

Translation: “O children of Adam! We have sent down to you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment…”

This verse shows clothes are not just physical coverings but also spiritual symbols.

There are several authentic duas the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) would say when putting on clothing. One of the most well-known is:

Transliteration: Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu, anta kasawtanīhi, asʾaluka min khayrihi wa-khayri mā ṣuniʿa lah, wa-aʿūdhu bika min sharrihi wa-sharri mā ṣuniʿa lah

Translation: O Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), all praise is for You. You clothed me with it. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made, and I seek refuge in You from its evil and the evil for which it was made. (Abu Dawood)

Hadith on Dua for Wearing New Clothes

ʿAn Abī Saʿīd qāla: kāna Rasūlu Allāhi ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam idhā istajadda thawban sammāhu bi-ismihi — ʿimāmah aw qamīṣan aw ridāʾ — thumma yaqūlu: Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu, anta kasawtanīhi, asʾaluka khayrahu wa-khayra mā ṣuniʿa lah, wa-aʿūdhu bika min sharrihi wa-sharri mā ṣuniʿa lah

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: When the Messenger of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), peace and blessings be upon him, wore a new garment he would name it, such as a turban, a shirt, or a cloak, and then he would say,

“O Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), praise be to you that you have dressed me with it. I ask you for its goodness and the goodness for which it was made. I seek refuge in you from its evil and the evil for which it was made.”.

What Is the General Dua for Wearing Clothes?

Even when not wearing something new, there’s a general dua for wearing clothes:

“بِسْمِ اللَّهِ” – Bismillah (In the name of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ))

Another authentic narration is:

Transliteration: Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī kasānī hādhā (ath-thawb) wa-razaqanīhi min ghayri ḥawlin minnī wa-lā quwwah

Translation: Praise be to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) who has clothed me with this (garment) and provided it to me without any power or might from myself.

This reminds Muslims that every garment, whether old or new, is a gift from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

What Is the Etiquette of Wearing and Removing Clothes in Islam?

Islam teaches modesty and decency. Before putting on or removing clothes, say:

This simple phrase protects from shaytan and guards privacy.

The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that saying Bismillah creates a barrier between the jinn and one’s body.

Also, one should begin wearing clothes from the right side—right sleeve, right leg, etc. Upon removal, start from the left.

This order is based on several hadiths, aligning daily acts with a prophetic pattern of balance and respect.

When you see a fellow Muslim in new clothes, say:

Transliteration: Tublī wa-yukhlifu Allāhu taʿālā

Translation: May you wear it out and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) replace it with something better

Another option is:

Transliteration: Bāraka Allāhu laka fīhi

Translation: May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless it for you.

These phrases not only express kindness but also make a dua of blessings for your brother or sister in Islam.

They foster love, unity, and gratitude within the Muslim community.
