Why Muslims Make Dua for Pain Relief (Shifa) — Quran, Sunnah, and Tawakkul

Shifa, or healing, is mentioned in several places in the Quran. Pain reminds a person of their need for Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى).

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) made duas in times of illness and advised his companions to do the same.

Pain is not always a punishment; it may be a way to remove sins or increase closeness to Allah. Supplication is encouraged alongside medicine, not as a replacement but a companion to effort.

Dua for Pain Relief in the Body (Arabic, Transliteration, English)

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) taught this simple dua to recite while placing one’s hand on the area of pain:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ، اشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي، لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ، شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Translation: O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the harm and heal. You are the Healer. There is no healing except Your healing; a healing that leaves no disease behind.

Transliteration: Allahumma Rabban-Naas, adhhib al-ba’s, ishfi anta ash-Shaafi, la shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka, shifaa’an la yughadiru saqama.

This same prayer applies to back pain, joint pain, knee pain, chest pain, tooth pain, stomach pain, leg pain, hand pain, foot pain, ear pain, eye pain, and mouth pain.

It is also used for physical pain in general.

Dua to Ease Pain in the Heart (Emotional Pain & Suffering)

For emotional pain and sadness, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) would say:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ

Translation: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and grief.

Transliteration: Allahumma inni a‘udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan.

Translation: My Lord, do not leave me alone [childless], though You are the best of inheritors.

Transliteration: Wa Zakariyyā idh nādā rabbahū rabbi lā tadharnī fardan wa anta khayru al-wārithīn.
