In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Wudu is the act of ritual washing before prayer.

It’s required before salah. A Muslim washes the hands, face, arms, feet, and wipes the head to attain the ritual purity.

This removal of minor impurities prepares both body and mind before namaz.

What is Wudu in Islam?

The Arabic word wudu comes from “wadha’a,” which means light.

This act is said to brighten the limbs of believers on the Day of Judgment. The effect is physical but spiritual as well.

Islamic Meaning and Virtue of Wudu Dua Before Salah

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) spoke about staying in a clean state. A narration in Sahih Muslim says each drop of water during wudu removes a sin.

The Quran, in Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:6), instructs believers to wash before prayer.

Wudu shows discipline and submission to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) in the Islamic context.

What is the Niyyah (Intention) for Wudu?

You start with niyyah (intention). Say nothing aloud. Focus your heart on cleansing for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Begin with بِسْمِ اللَّهِ — dua before wudu Bismillah.

Step-by-Step Duas During Wudu (With Transliteration and English)

No exact wudu dua step by step is found in hadith. Scholars recommend remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) while washing. Keep the focus steady.

Dua While Washing Hands, Mouth, Nose, Face, and Feet

While washing each part, you should think of what that limb does and ask Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to purify its actions. No fixed duas are necessary, but one Islamic narration includes:

اللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنَ الْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

Transliteration: Allahumma aj‘alni min at-tawwabīn wa aj‘alni min al-mutatahhirīn
Translation: O Allah, make me among those who repent and those who purify themselves

Dua During Wiping the Head and Ears

This step has no fixed wudu dua. Still, a person can reflect. A short dhikr here is fine.

Ask Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) for clarity and guidance.

Dua Before and After Performing Wudu (Ablution)

Begin wudu by saying:

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

Transliteration: Bismillah
Translation: In the name of Allah

You can say, this is the core of the dua before wudu.

Say this dua after wudu:

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Transliteration: Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluhu
Translation: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and Muhammad is His servant and messenger

That completes the wudu dua before and after. It is also taught in Islamic studies curricula and school lessons.

Can I Recite Without Wudu?

Yes, the wudu duas can be recited even without ablution. This dua is also the declaration of faith. Scholars say the du’a after wudu carries more reward.
