dua for shifa

In times of illness and pain, many turn to a dua for shifa to seek healing from Allah. In Islam, Shifa, meaning “healing” or “recovery,” is not only physical but also spiritual, a path through which one draws closer to Allah in trust and reliance.

The dua for shifa encompasses a range of supplications rooted in the Quran and Hadith, intended to provide comfort and relief during challenging times.

Reciting a dua for shifa can be a powerful way to seek Allah’s mercy and healing. Among the most revered and powerful dua for shifa in Arabic is a supplication reported from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), emphasising that Allah alone is the ultimate healer.

Many Muslims also seek comfort by reciting Ayatul Kursi and specific surahs like Surah Rahman and Surah Taghabun, which are believed to bring blessings and recovery.

This guide covers various duas for shifa and healing, including supplications for health, dua for shifa for someone else, and dua for speedy recovery and protection.

Whether it’s a dua for shifa after an operation or a dua for shifa in English, you’ll find here powerful words to uplift you or a loved one during times of illness, with translations, transliterations, and explanations to ensure each dua can be recited with ease and understanding.

May Allah grant all those reciting these duas for shifa comfort, strength, and swift recovery.

What Does Shifa Mean in Islam?

In Islamic teachings, Shifa refers to healing, wellness, and the recovery of physical, mental, and spiritual health. Derived from the Arabic root word “شِفَاء” (Shifa), which means “to cure” or “to heal,” it signifies not only physical healing but also relief and spiritual well-being.

Muslims frequently recite specific duas for Shifa from the Quran and Hadith, as we believe that seeking divine assistance through prayer can bring blessings, protection, and recovery.

Shifa is not limited to physical ailments; it encompasses inner peace, mental clarity, and emotional balance. Muslims invoke Allah (الله سبحانه وتعالى)’s mercy and compassion for Shifa, recognising that ultimate healing comes solely from Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged making dua for Shifa for oneself and others, affirming that Allah alone possesses the power of healing and recovery.

Common recitations for Shifa include verses like Ayatul Kursi, Surah Fatiha, and other prescribed duas believed to bring calm, resilience, and relief during illness or hardship.

The concept of Shifa emphasises turning to Allah in times of need and seeking blessings for speedy recovery and complete healing. This principle underscores a holistic approach to well-being, integrating both faith and the recitation of duas to find relief and peace.

dua for eyesight

Our senses are how we perceive the world, which is this beautiful world that Allah created. While all senses are important, eyesight is arguably the most important one.

In one study, 88% of the respondents placed eyesight/vision as the most valuable sense.

This is why dua for eyesight should be a consistent part of our routine. Even if we don’t suffer from eye problems or diseases, incorporating dua for eyesight (preferably a combination of duas) should still be a regular practice.

For those with vision issues, whether it’s something minor like weak eyesight or more serious conditions like macular degeneration, dua for eyesight should be as frequent as any medical remedies they are following.

What Does Allah (SWT) Say About The Human Eyesight In The Quran?

According to one paper, there are 34 Quranic verses related to visual function.

Allah (SWT) has mentioned human eyesight several times and in different contexts. Most of the instances where the words related to vision and eyesight were used referred to appeasing and soothing the eyes or how eyes are used to supervise.

However, Allah (SWT) also mentioned eyes in terms of their function and numbers (Quran 90:8):

Arabic

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ

Transliteration

alam naj’al lahu aynayni

Translation

Have We not given them two eyes.

One instance of an eye disease is also mentioned in the context of extreme grief: “He turned away from them, lamenting, “Alas, poor Joseph!” And his eyes turned white out of the grief he suppressed.” (Quran 12:84)

The Broader Context

It’s important to note that in addition to eyes and eyesight, multiple mentions are made of what they are used for, i.e., seeing.

Allah (SWT) said: “Do they not see that We made the night for them to rest in and the day bright? Surely in this are signs for those who believe.” (Quran 27:86).

In this context, eyesight is not just a critical blessing. It’s also a facilitator of faith, as it helps people see the glory of Allah’s creations. This makes the dua for eyesight even more significant.

Dua For Eyesight Improvement

Dua for eyesight improvements are present in both Quran and Hadith.

Dua From Quran

One dua, which is frequently referenced in various sources, comes from Surah Qaf. Some sources advise reciting it three times, whereas others recommend repeating it seven times.

Arabic

فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌۭ

Transliteration

Fakashafna anka ghitaaka fabasaruka al-yawma hadidun

English Translation

Now We have lifted this veil of yours, so Today your sight is sharp!

Dua From Hadith

Transliteration

Allahumma ‘aafinee fee badanee, Allahumma ‘aafinee fee sam’ee, Allahumma ‘aafinee fee basaree, laa ilaaha illaa ant.

English Translation

O Allah, make my body healthy. O Allah, make me healthy in my hearing. O Allah, make me healthy in my sight. There is no god but You.

Duas For Sore Eyes Hadith

One dua for sore eyes (from Hadith) is:

Arabic

Transliteration

Allahumma Mati’ni bi Basari Waj alhu Al Waaritha Minni Wa Arini Fil Aduw-wi  Tha’ri  Wan Surni Ala man dhalamani.

English Translation

O Allah, let my hearing and sight be sound and make them remain sound until I die. Turn away from me, the one who wrongs me, and give me revenge on him.

What Improves Eyesight In Islam?

The Hadith and Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) include several references to remedies and items that could be used to improve eyesight.

Visit Your Doctor And Get A Check Up

Islam encourages its followers to seek practical solutions for problems, which includes using medicine and having their eyes checked by a doctor.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment.”

Honey

Honey is cherished for its medicinal properties in Islam.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said,

[/hadith_border]“Healing is in three things: cupping, a gulp of honey or cauterisation (branding with fire) but I forbid my followers to use cauterisation (branding with fire).” [/hadith_border]

This makes ingesting honey a broad-spectrum cure for many health issues, including eye problems.

Modern medicine also considers honey an effective eye treatment thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is known for its many health benefits. It was narrated from ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Season (your food) with olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree.”

A verse in the Quran (An-Nur 24:35) also points to its importance. Scholars have also studied it for its medicinal properties for ages.

Truffle (Kama’ah)

Truffles, or desert mushrooms, which used to be referred to as Kama’ah, are also considered an important remedy for eye problems.

In addition to dua for eyesight, using truffles, since the Prophet (peace be upon him) mentioned them for their benefits for eyes, can yield positive results.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Truffles are a form of manna, and its liquid is a cure for the eye. Al-‘Ajwah is from Paradise, and it contains a cure for poison.”

How To Pray And Ask Allah For Good Eyesight?

Respect and proper procedure, as passed on to us by the Prophet (peace be upon him), Sahaba, and Islamic scholars, are essential when praying to Allah for good eyesight.

Step 1: Praise Allah

It’s good practice to start your dua with Surah Al-Fatiha. You can also use Allah’s name to invoke his blessing and mercy before you start your dua.

Step 2: Make The Actual Dua

When asking Allah for good eyesight, don’t make it all about the words you utter.

Feel it and fill your dua with heartfelt emotions. Take your time. And keep invoking Allah’s various attributes, such as his mercy, forgiveness, absolute power, etc.

Step 3: Say Ameen and Pray For Others As Well

Praying for others, in your family, friends, or even strangers, can also be a good practice.

Summary – Dua for Eyesight

Dua for eyesight and following the remedies mentioned in Hadith can help you improve your eyesight and manage a wide range of eye diseases.

A strong belief in dua and staying consistent with your prayers can help you with your problem and bring you closer to Allah.

How can I Pray for a New Born Baby in Islam?

You should pray for a baby with a sincere heart. Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) knows your heart, so it is important to be sincere in your intentions when you make dua. Making a dua for a newborn baby should not be a one-time event. It is important to pray regularly for the baby’s well-being.

Step 1: Make a Sincere Intention

Before you begin to pray, take a moment to clear your mind and focus on your intention to pray for the newborn baby. Ask Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to bestow His blessings upon your children granting them a life filled with health, faith, and happiness.

Step 2: Show Respect and Humility

Other Duas That Can Be Recited

Sunnahs of a Newborn Baby

The birth of a child is a momentous occasion in Islam, and there are certain Sunnahs (practises of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) that are recommended to be performed to celebrate and bless the newborn. These practices are not obligatory but are highly encouraged as they carry spiritual significance and blessings.

Adhan and Iqamah

One of the first Sunnahs to perform upon the arrival of a newborn is to recite the Adhan (call to prayer) in the baby’s right ear. The Iqamah (call to commence prayer) is also recommended to be recited in the left ear.

This beautiful tradition is often carried out by the father or a pious individual in the family. The Adhan and Iqamah are recited softly and gently in the baby’s ears, welcoming them to a life of faith and devotion. This act signifies the parents’ intention to raise their child per Islamic principles and to instil in them a love for Allah (سبحانه وتعالى)  from the very beginning.

Chewing of the Date (Tahneek)

Tahneek is a Sunnah in which a small piece of softened date is gently rubbed on the baby’s palate. A pious person performs this practice, which is believed to bring blessings and sweetness to the child’s life. It symbolises the child’s first taste of something sweet and wholesome.

The date used for Tahneek is usually chosen for its softness and quality. The pious person chews or mashes it until it becomes a paste-like consistency. Then, a small amount is carefully applied to the baby’s upper palate with a clean finger. This act is performed with gentleness and care, invoking blessings and supplications for the child’s well-being and future.

Naming the Child

Choosing a good name for the child is an important responsibility in Islam. The name should be given on the seventh day after birth, coinciding with the Aqiqah.

Parents are encouraged to select names with beautiful meanings. They should preferably name their children after Prophets, or attributes of Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), such as Abdullah and Abdur Rahman.

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) emphasised the significance of giving good names to children.

He said, “On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your fathers’ names, so give yourselves good names.”

A good name reflects the parents’ hopes and aspirations for their child and serves as a constant reminder of their identity and connection to their faith. It is a gift that will stay with the child throughout their life.

Aqiqah

Aqiqah is the sacrifice of an animal (usually a sheep or goat) to express gratitude to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) for the blessing of a child. The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) said: “The boy is mortgaged by his ‘Aqiqah; slaughtering should be done for him on the seventh day, he should be given a name, and his head should be shaved.”

The Aqiqah serves as a symbolic gesture of thanking Allah (سبحانه وتعالى)  for the child’s safe arrival and acknowledging that the child is a gift and a trust from Him. It is also believed to strengthen the bond between the child and the community, as the shared meal fosters a sense of unity and celebration.

Furthermore, the Aqiqah has a social dimension, as the distribution of meat ensures that the community’s less fortunate members are included in the joyous occasion. This charity reinforces the Islamic values of compassion, generosity, and social responsibility.

Circumcision

Circumcision is a Sunnah for boys, typically performed shortly after birth or during childhood. It promotes hygiene and has health benefits. Circumcision also symbolises the covenant between Allah  (سبحانه وتعالى) and Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham).

In Islamic tradition, circumcision is obligatory for all believing Muslim men. It is considered an act of fitrah (natural disposition) and a sign of submission to Allah’s (سبحانه وتعالى) will.

A qualified medical professional should perform circumcision in a safe and sterile environment. Parents should consult with their healthcare provider to determine the appropriate timing and procedure for their child’s circumcision.

Shaving the child’s head

Shaving the baby’s head is recommended on the seventh day after birth. This practice symbolises cleanliness and purity. The shaved hair is weighed, and its equivalent weight in silver is given to charity. This act further demonstrates gratitude and generosity.

Children’s Duties and Responsibilities Toward Their Parents

Islam places great emphasis on the importance of family ties, particularly the relationship between parents and children.

While parents have the primary responsibility of nurturing and guiding their children, children also have certain duties and responsibilities towards their parents, which are rooted in love, respect, and gratitude.

Showing Love and Affection

Children are encouraged to express their love and affection for their parents through kind words, gentle gestures, and thoughtful actions. This includes spending time with them, listening attentively to their concerns, and offering comfort and support in times of need.

Even a simple act like a warm embrace or a heartfelt “I love you” can go a long way in strengthening the parent-child bond.

Respect and Obedience

Respecting parents is a fundamental principle in Islam. Children are expected to treat their parents with honour and reverence, avoiding any behaviour that may cause them distress or disrespect.

This includes speaking to them politely, using respectful language, and refraining from raising their voices or arguing with them. Obedience to parents is also highly valued as long as it does not conflict with Islamic teachings.

Gratitude and Appreciation

Children should always be grateful to their parents for the countless sacrifices they have made and the unconditional love they have shown.

Expressing gratitude can be done through words, actions, or even silent prayers. Remembering their parents in their prayers and seeking Allah’s blessings for them is a beautiful way to show appreciation.

Caring for Parents in Old Age

As parents age, their needs may change, and they may require additional care and support.

Children have a responsibility to look after their elderly parents, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being. This could involve providing financial assistance, helping with household chores, or simply being there for them as a source of companionship and comfort.

Seeking their Guidance and Forgiveness

Parents are a source of wisdom and experience, and children should seek their guidance and advice in various aspects of life. It is also important to seek their forgiveness for any mistakes or shortcomings, as their blessings are invaluable.

Islam teaches children to honour their parents through love, respect, gratitude, and care. Fulfilling these duties is not only a religious obligation but also a means of attaining Allah’s pleasure and blessings.

dua for mother

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful.

Islam places immense value on mothers. The Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) consistently highlight the importance of treating one’s mother with honour and deep appreciation.

We must express our gratitude and fulfil our religious obligations towards our beloved mothers who have given us so much.

This article explores the significance of mothers in Islam, focusing on the power of a mothers duas (supplications) and providing guidance on how to make dua for their well-being.

What Does Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) Say About Mothers in the Quran?

In the Quran, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) frequently emphasises the importance of kindness and gratitude towards parents, particularly mothers. Numerous verses highlight the sacrifices mothers make for their children.

For instance, the Quran eloquently portrays the hardships mothers endure during pregnancy, childbirth, and the subsequent years of raising children.

In Surah Luqman, verse 14, Allah  (سبحانه وتعالى) says:

“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”

This verse beautifully captures motherhood’s physical and emotional toll, highlighting the prolonged period of weakness and vulnerability mothers experience. It also underscores the importance of gratitude towards mothers, placing it alongside gratitude towards Allah (سبحانه وتعالى).

Additionally, in surah Al-Ahqaf, verse 15, Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) says:

“And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.”

The above verse underscores a mother’s role’s significance and unwavering commitment to her child’s well-being.

Furthermore, the Quran repeatedly mentions the rights of parents immediately after commanding the worship of Allah  (سبحانه وتعالى)  alone. This juxtaposition signifies the paramount importance of honouring and cherishing one’s parents, particularly mothers.

In addition to these specific verses, the Quran also talks about respecting and honouring one’s parents alongside worshipping Allah (سبحانه وتعالى), demonstrating the elevated status of parents in Islam.

Mother’s Status in Islam

Islam places an emphasis on honouring and respecting mothers. The Quran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) repeatedly highlight the elevated status of mothers and the immense sacrifices they make.

This emphasis stems from recognising mothers’ vital role in nurturing, shaping, and guiding individuals and, by extension, society as a whole.

Mothers in the Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) emphasised the significance of mothers in numerous hadiths (sayings and traditions). Abu Huraira reported that a person said: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ), who amongst the people is most deserving of my good treatment? He said:

Your mother, again your mother, again your mother, then your father, then your nearest relatives according to the order (of nearness).

This hadith powerfully illustrates the high status of mothers in Islam, highlighting their immense rights and the importance of prioritising their well-being.

The Rights of Mothers

Islam outlines several rights that mothers have over their children. These rights include:

  • Respect and Obedience: Children must treat their mothers with utmost respect and obedience, even as they grow older. This includes speaking to them kindly, fulfilling their reasonable requests, and avoiding any actions that may cause them distress or displeasure.
  • Gratitude and Appreciation: Children should express gratitude and appreciation for their mother’s sacrifices and unwavering love. This can be done through words, actions, and consistent acts of kindness and support.
  • Care and Support: As mothers age, children are responsible for caring for and supporting them physically and emotionally. This includes ensuring their well-being, providing for their needs, and offering companionship and comfort.

The Rewards of Honouring Mothers

Honouring and respecting one’s mother is a moral obligation and a source of immense spiritual rewards. It was narrated from Mu’awiyah bin Jahimah As-Sulami, that Jahimah came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said:

“O Messenger of Allah  (سبحانه وتعالى) ! I want to go out and fight (in Jihad) and I have come to ask your advice.”

He said:

“Do you have a mother?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Then stay with her, for Paradise is beneath her feet.”

This hadith signifies that attaining Paradise is closely linked to fulfilling the rights of mothers and seeking their pleasure. By honouring their mothers, individuals pave the way for their own spiritual success and eternal happiness.

The status of mothers in Islam is one of immense reverence and honour. Mothers are recognised for their sacrifices, unwavering love, and profound influence on individuals and society.

Islam mandates that children treat their mothers with utmost respect, obedience, gratitude, and care. By fulfilling the rights of mothers, you fulfil your religious obligation and benefit from spiritual growth and eternal bliss.

The Power of Your Mother’s Dua

A mother’s dua holds exceptional significance in Islam. Firstly, the Prophet Muhammad(صلى الله عليه و سلم) emphasised the importance of parents’ duas, stating that they are among the most readily accepted by Allah (سبحانه وتعالى).

Consequently, a mother’s supplication for her child carries immense weight and has the potential to bring about profound blessings.

A mother’s love for her child is limitless, and her duas stem from a place of deep affection and genuine concern. This sincerity further amplifies the potency of her prayers. You should reciprocate the feelings of your beloved mother by making dua for her.

How to Make Dua for Your Mother?

Making dua for your mother is a beautiful way to express your love, gratitude, and respect for her. It is an act of worship that brings you closer to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and strengthens your bond with your mom.

Here are some steps to guide you in making heartfelt and effective duas for her well-being:

Step 1: Begin with Praising Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and Send Salat on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

You should commence your dua by expressing gratitude to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and sending salat on Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

‘When one of you performs Salat, then let him begin by expressing gratitude to Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) and praising Him. Then, let him send Salat upon the Prophet (ﷺ), then let him supplicate after that, whatever he wishes.’

Beginning your dua in this manner demonstrates humility and respect, creating the appropriate mindset for supplication. Making a due for your mother in this manner increases the chances of your duas being accepted.

Step 2: Make Dua for Your Mother’s Well-being

You must pray for your mother’s overall well-being. Ask Allah  (سبحانه وتعالى)  to grant her good health, both physical and mental. Ask Him to grant your mother strength and protect her from illness and harm.

Furthermore, you should supplicate for her happiness and contentment in this life and the hereafter. Beseech Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) to forgive her sins, grant her Jannah (Paradise), and elevate her status in the afterlife. Remember to be specific in your requests, mentioning any challenges or concerns your mother may face.

Step 3: Conclude with Durood on Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم)

You must conclude your dua reciting durood (blessings) on Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) at the end of your dua.

Concluding your dua with a durood on Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) is important as one of his companions Umar bin Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated:

“Indeed the supplication stops between the heavens and the earth. Nothing of it is raised up until you send Salat upon your Prophet ﷺ.”

Dua for Mother’s Health

duas before and after eating

In Islam, food isn’t merely sustenance for the body; it’s a blessing from Allah. Making dua before and after eating acknowledges this blessing, expresses gratitude, and seeks further blessings and protection from Allah.

It’s a beautiful way to connect our physical needs with our spiritual well-being. It reminds us that even the simple act of eating can be an act of worship.

We’ll delve into the significance of dua (supplication) before and after meals in Islam.

We’ll explore the profound meanings behind these supplications, highlight specific duas to recite, and shed light on the etiquette and Sunnah practices associated with eating and drinking.

Why is it important to make dua before and after eating in Islam?

In Islam, food transcends its role as mere sustenance for the body; it’s a profound blessing bestowed by Allah (SWT), a manifestation of His boundless mercy and provision.

The act of making dua (supplication) before and after meals goes far beyond a simple tradition. It embodies a deep spiritual connection, acknowledging this blessing, expressing sincere gratitude, and seeking further blessings and protection from the Almighty.

By making dua before and eating, we elevate a mundane act to an act of worship, fostering mindfulness and strengthening our bond with the Divine. Making dua before and after meals serves the following purposes:

Recognising the Divine Provision

Every morsel of food that nourishes our bodies is a testament to Allah’s (SWT) infinite grace and generosity. From the fertile soil that yields crops to the intricate processes that transform raw ingredients into delectable dishes, His signs are evident in every step.

Making dua before eating serves as a powerful reminder of this divine provision. It allows us to pause and acknowledge that the sustenance we are about to receive is not merely a product of human effort but a gift from the Most Merciful.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Allah is pleased with a servant who eats a meal and praises Him for it, or drinks a drink and praises Him for it.” (Muslim) This hadith beautifully illustrates the importance of recognising and appreciating Allah’s blessings, even in the simplest of acts like eating and drinking.

Expressing Gratitude: A Pathway to Contentment

Gratitude is a cornerstone of Islamic teachings, and expressing it through dua after meals is a powerful way to cultivate contentment and inner peace.

The act of thanking Allah (SWT) for the nourishment we’ve received shifts our focus from what we may lack to the abundance that surrounds us. It fosters a sense of humility and appreciation, reminding us that even the most basic necessities are not to be taken for granted.

The Quran repeatedly emphasises the importance of gratitude. In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:172), Allah (SWT) says,

“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.”

This verse serves as a gentle reminder to acknowledge the source of our sustenance and express our gratitude to the One who provides.

Seeking Blessings and Protection: An Act of Reliance

Dua before and after eating is not just an expression of gratitude; it’s also an opportunity to seek further blessings and protection from Allah (SWT).

Before we partake in a meal, we can invoke His blessings upon the food, praying that it nourishes our bodies and strengthens us in our worship. Similarly, after eating, we can express our gratitude and seek protection from any harm that may arise from the food we’ve consumed.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us specific duas to recite before and after meals. The duas express gratitude for the sustenance received and reaffirm our identity as Muslims.

Fostering Mindfulness: Eating with Awareness

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to mindlessly consume food without truly appreciating its value or the effort that went into its creation.

Making dua before and after meals encourages us to slow down and be present in the moment. It prompts us to reflect on the journey of the food from its source to our plates and to appreciate the countless hands that played a role in its production.

Moreover, dua reminds us to eat in moderation and avoid excess. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the son of Adam to eat a few morsels to keep his back straight. But if he must fill it, then one-third for his food, one-third for his drink, and one-third for his breath.” (Ibn Majah 3349) This hadith highlights the importance of mindful eating and avoiding overindulgence.

Strengthening the Spiritual Connection

Beyond its practical benefits, making dua before and after eating fosters a deeper spiritual connection with Allah (SWT). It’s a constant reminder that He is the ultimate Provider and Sustainer.

It encourages us to rely on Him for our needs and to express our gratitude for His countless blessings.

Furthermore, the act of supplication itself is a form of worship. It’s a conversation with our Creator, a chance to express our hopes, fears, and desires.

By incorporating dua into our eating habits, we transform a mundane act into an opportunity for spiritual growth and connection.

Sunnah and Etiquette of Eating and Drinking

Embracing Prophetic Etiquette: Manners for Mindful Eating

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), a beacon of guidance and exemplary character, provided detailed teachings on how to approach even the simple act of eating and drinking with mindfulness and grace.

These etiquettes not only promote physical well-being but also cultivate a sense of gratitude and respect for the blessings we receive.

  • Wash hands before and after meals: Cleanliness is a cornerstone of Islamic practice, both physically and spiritually. Washing hands before and after meals ensures hygiene and reflects a mindful approach to food.
  • Eat with the right hand: The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasised eating with the right hand, considering it the preferred and more respectful way to partake in a meal.
  • Say “Bismillah” before starting and “Alhamdulillah” after finishing: These phrases, meaning “In the name of Allah” and “All praise is due to Allah,” respectively, bookend the act of eating with remembrance of Allah (SWT), invoking His blessings at the beginning and expressing gratitude at the end.
  • Eat from what is in front of you: This etiquette encourages focus and discourages excessive reaching or taking from others’ plates, fostering a sense of contentment and respect for shared meals.
  • Avoid criticising food: Gratitude is paramount in Islam. Refraining from criticising food, even if it doesn’t suit our preferences, reflects appreciation for the provision and the effort put into its preparation.
  • Don’t waste food: Food is a precious blessing, and wasting it is discouraged in Islam. Taking only what we can consume and avoiding excessive leftovers reflects responsible consumption and gratitude for Allah’s (SWT) bounty.
  • Share food with others: Generosity and hospitality are highly valued in Islam. Sharing food with others, whether family, friends, or those in need, fosters a sense of community and strengthens social bonds.

Adhering to these prophetic etiquettes will elevate the act of eating and drinking from mere sustenance to a mindful and spiritually enriching experience. We cultivate gratitude, respect, and awareness, transforming each meal into an opportunity to connect with Allah (SWT) and His blessings.

Mentions from the Quran

The Quran emphasises the importance of gratitude and mindfulness when consuming food and drink.

  • Surah Al-Baqarah (2:172) “O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.”

Mentions from Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provided numerous guidelines for eating and drinking, further highlighting their significance in Islam.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“The food of one person is sufficient for two, and the food of two people is sufficient for four, and the food of four people is sufficient for eight.”
(Sahih Muslim) This hadith emphasises moderation and the importance of sharing food.

These additional duas and etiquettes demonstrate the holistic approach Islam takes towards nourishment. By incorporating these practices, we not only nourish our bodies but also cultivate gratitude, mindfulness, and a deeper connection with Allah (SWT).

Incorporating these simple duas into our meals transforms them into acts of worship. Let us savor each bite with mindfulness and appreciation, acknowledging the blessings of Allah (SWT) in every morsel. Remember, every meal is an opportunity to connect with the Divine. Let’s make dua a part of our dining experience, nourishing both our bodies and souls.

Other Types of Duas

Beyond the specific morning invocations, Islam encourages supplication in various facets of life, recognising that every action, big or small, can be an opportunity to connect with Allah (SWT).

From entering the bathroom to embarking on a journey, these duas serve as constant reminders of our reliance on the divine and our desire for His blessings and protection. Let’s explore a few more essential supplications to incorporate into our daily lives.

Dua After Leaving the Toilet

Even mundane activities like using the toilet have associated duas, demonstrating the comprehensiveness of Islamic guidance.

Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172

Alhamdu lillahil lazi azhaba annil aza wa ‘afani.

Sleep, a state of vulnerability, is also a time for seeking Allah’s protection and expressing gratitude for another day.

English (Translation and Transliteration)

Before Sleeping

“In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and in You, I shall raise it. If You should take my soul, then have mercy upon it, and if You should return my soul, then protect it in the manner You do so with Your righteous servants.”

Reference: Surah Al-Baqarah 2:172

Summary – Dua Before and After Eating

In Islam, even the act of eating and drinking is an opportunity for spiritual connection. By incorporating duas into our meals and following the etiquettes taught by the Prophet (peace be upon him), we transform these everyday actions into acts of worship.

Learning the significance of the dua before eating and dua after eating is essential in fostering gratitude in both adults and kids.

The dua before eating food reminds us to thank God for the provisions of food and water. When sharing meals with kids, it’s helpful to tell stories about the messenger and how he emphasized expressing thanks through prayer.

The dua after eating serves as a moment of reflection, thanking God for the sustenance provided. A quick reminder to kids to recite these duas before and after eating food can go a long way in creating a habit of gratitude.

Teaching children to say the dua after eating and acknowledging the blessings of food after eating will help them learn to appreciate every bite as a gift from God.

Every meal is a blessing. Let’s embrace these beautiful practices, fostering gratitude, mindfulness, and a deeper relationship with Allah (SWT).

What should you do during the 2nd Ashra?

The second Ashra is a period of heightened spiritual activity. Here are some recommended practices:

  • Increase your recitation of the Quran

The second Ashra, the Ashra of Forgiveness, is an ideal time to deepen your connection with the Quran. Aim to complete its recitation at least once during this period.

Allocate dedicated time each day, perhaps after Fajr or Taraweeh prayers, to immerse yourself in the divine words. As you recite, focus on understanding the meanings and reflecting upon the verses.

The Quran provides guidance and solace, offering profound insights into life’s purpose and the path to righteousness.

By contemplating its verses, you can better understand Allah’s (SWT) commands and strengthen your faith.

Moreover, reciting the Quran with understanding can bring immense peace and tranquillity to your heart.

Remember, the Quran is not merely a book to be read; it’s a treasure trove of wisdom to be internalized. Try to memorize verses that resonate with you and implement their teachings daily.

Let the Quran illuminate your path and guide you towards a more fulfilling and purposeful existence.

  • Engage in dhikr (remembrance of Allah)

Dhikr, or the remembrance of Allah (SWT), is a powerful spiritual practice that nourishes the soul and strengthens the bond with the Divine.

During the second Ashra, dedicate ample time to engage in dhikr. Recite the beautiful names of Allah (SWT), glorifying His attributes and seeking His blessings.

Offer Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), expressing your love and reverence for the final messenger of Allah.

Make dua (supplications) throughout the day, seeking forgiveness, guidance, and blessings from Allah (SWT).

Dhikr can be performed in various ways, including reciting specific phrases, engaging in silent contemplation, or listening to Quran recitations.

Make it a habit to incorporate dhikr into your daily routine, whether during your commute, while performing chores, or before bed.

  • Perform extra prayers

The second Ashra is an opportune time to increase your voluntary prayers, known as Nafl prayers.

Consider waking up at night to perform Tahajjud, a special prayer known for its spiritual rewards and blessings.

Nafl prayers are a beautiful way to express your devotion to Allah (SWT) and draw closer to Him.

They provide a space for personal reflection, supplication, and gratitude. Even a few extra Rakats can significantly impact your spiritual journey.

Remember, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged his followers to engage in voluntary prayers, especially during Ramadan.

These prayers serve as a means of attaining closeness to Allah (SWT) and seeking His pleasure.

  • Give in charity

Charity, or Sadaqah, is unique in Islam, particularly during Ramadan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known for his immense generosity, especially during this blessed month.

Take inspiration from his example and open your heart to those in need. Donate generously to charitable causes, support orphans and the less fortunate, and extend a helping hand to those struggling around you.

Remember, even small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life.

Charity benefits the recipient, purifies the giver’s heart, and brings the giver closer to Allah (SWT).

It’s a beautiful way to express gratitude for the blessings you have received and contribute to the well-being of your community.

  • Seek knowledge

Ramadan is a month of spiritual growth and intellectual enrichment.

Take advantage of this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Islam by attending Islamic lectures and seminars, watching educational videos online, and reading books on various Islamic topics.

Seeking knowledge is a lifelong pursuit that brings countless benefits. It strengthens your faith, empowers you to make informed decisions, and helps you navigate life’s challenges with wisdom and clarity.

Remember, the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge, stating that it is obligatory for every Muslim.

Make a conscious effort to expand your Islamic knowledge during this blessed month.

  • Reflect on your actions

Ramadan is a time for introspection and self-improvement. Take time each day to reflect on your actions, thoughts, and intentions.

Identify areas for improvement and make a sincere effort to change.

Reflect on your relationships with others, your conduct towards your family and community, and your overall spiritual state.

Ramadan provides a unique opportunity to break free from harmful habits and cultivate positive traits.

Remember, the true purpose of Ramadan is to transform ourselves into better individuals.

By engaging in sincere self-reflection and striving for self-improvement, we can emerge from this blessed month with a renewed sense of purpose and a stronger connection with Allah (SWT).

How many stages of Ramadan are there?

Ramadan is divided into three Ashras, each with its spiritual focus:

First Ashra – 1st 10 days of Ramadan

  • Theme: Mercy (Rahmah)
  • Focus: Seeking Allah’s mercy and forgiveness

Second Ashra – 2nd 10 days of Ramadan

  • Theme: Forgiveness (Maghfirah)
  • Focus: Seeking forgiveness for past sins

Ramadan is a time of immense spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide. This month-long fasting, prayer, and reflection period is divided into three Ashras, each lasting ten days.

The first Ashra, the first 10 days of ramadan, is known as the Ashra of Mercy (Rahmah). It is a time for seeking Allah’s (SWT) blessings, forgiveness, and mercy. During these ten days, Muslims are encouraged to recite specific duas (supplications) to express their devotion and seek divine guidance.

Let’s explore the significance of the first Ashra and some of the recommended duas for this blessed period.

What is the first Ashra during Ramadan?

The first Ashra of Ramadan, spanning the initial ten days of the holy month, is dedicated to seeking Allah’s (SWT) mercy and forgiveness.

It is a time for deep introspection, repentance, and spiritual renewal. Muslims are encouraged to worship, charity, and self-reflection to draw closer to Allah (SWT) and seek His blessings.

When is the first Ashra of Ramadan 2025?

The exact dates of Ramadan vary each year, depending on the lunar calendar. In 2025, the first Ashra of Ramadan will begin on February 28th/March 1st.

However, it’s essential to confirm the exact dates with your local mosque or Islamic community closer to the time.

How to make the most out of the first Ashra of Ramadan

Tip 1 – Set clear intentions

Setting clear intentions at the beginning of the first Ashra is like charting a course for a fulfilling spiritual journey.

You should take a moment to reflect on your relationship with Allah (SWT) and identify areas where you seek improvement. Whether it’s strengthening your prayer habits, increasing your acts of charity, or improving your character, you must define your goals and commit sincerely to strive towards overcoming them.

Intentions play a crucial role in the acceptance of our deeds. By setting clear intentions, you align your actions with your spiritual aspirations and seek to please Allah (SWT) in all that you do. Write down your intentions and revisit them regularly throughout the Ashra to stay focused and motivated.

Tip 2 – Recite the Quran regularly

The Quran is a source of immense guidance and blessings. During the first Ashra, dedicate time daily to recite and reflect upon its verses.

Whether after Fajr prayer, during your break at work, or before bed, find moments of tranquillity to connect with the divine words.

As you recite, strive to understand the meanings behind the verses and contemplate their relevance to your life. The Quran offers solutions to life’s challenges, provides comfort in times of hardship, and illuminates the path to righteousness. Let its wisdom penetrate your heart and guide your actions.

Tip 3 – Engage in dhikr and dua

Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah (SWT), is a powerful practice that nourishes the soul and brings peace to the heart. Throughout the day, engage in dhikr by reciting His names, glorifying His attributes, and expressing gratitude for His blessings.

Offer Salawat (blessings) upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), seeking his intercession and following his noble example.

Make dua to Allah (SWT) with sincerity and humility, asking for forgiveness, guidance, and blessings for yourself and others. Remember, Allah (SWT) is always near and responsive to the calls of His servants.

Tip 4 – Perform extra prayers

The first Ashra is an excellent opportunity to increase your voluntary or Nafl prayers. These prayers are a means of attaining closeness to Allah (SWT) and earning His pleasure.

Consider waking up at night to perform Tahajjud, a special prayer known for its spiritual rewards. You can also offer additional Rakats of worship throughout the day, such as the Duha prayer in the morning or the Ishraq prayer after sunrise. Remember, every voluntary prayer is a step closer to Allah (SWT).

Tip 6 – Control your tongue and actions.

Ramadan is a time for spiritual purification, including controlling our speech and actions. Make a conscious effort to avoid gossip, backbiting, and hurtful words. Focus on speaking kindly and using your words to uplift and inspire others.

Remember, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.” You must trive to embody the virtues of honesty, compassion, and forgiveness in your interactions with others.

Tip 7 – Seek forgiveness from others

Ramadan is the perfect time to seek their forgiveness if you have wronged anyone. You should reach out to those you have hurt, apologize sincerely, and make amends for your past mistakes.

Holding grudges and harbouring resentment can hinder your spiritual progress. By seeking forgiveness and reconciling with others, you cleanse your heart and create a more harmonious environment for yourself and those around you.

Tip 8 – Increase your acts of kindness

Ramadan is a month of compassion and empathy. Look for opportunities to perform acts of kindness and service to others. Help a neighbour with their groceries, volunteer at a local charity, or offer a kind word to someone in need.

Remember, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The best of people are those who are most beneficial to people.” Strive to be a source of positivity and support for those around you, and watch your good deeds multiply the blessings in your life.

Tip 8 – Disconnect from distractions

In today’s digital age, getting caught up in the endless stream of distractions is easy. During Ramadan, consciously disconnect from social media, excessive television, and other time-wasting activities.

Instead, focus on connecting with Allah (SWT) through prayer, Quran recitation, and dhikr. Use this time to reflect on your life, set goals for the future, and strengthen your relationship with your Creator.

Tip 9 – Make the most of Laylatul Qadr

The last ten nights of Ramadan hold a special significance, including Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Power. This night is considered more blessed than a thousand months, and it’s an opportunity to earn immense rewards from Allah (SWT).

Increase your acts of worship during these nights, spend time in prayer and supplication, and seek Allah’s (SWT) forgiveness and blessings.

Remember, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever stands (in prayer) during Laylatul Qadr out of faith and hope for reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” Make the most of this blessed night and reap its abundant rewards.

Tip 10 – Give to charity

Ramadan is a time for compassion and generosity. During the first Ashra, open your heart and extend a helping hand to those in need. Donate to charitable causes, support orphans and the less fortunate, and share your blessings with others.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of charity, especially during Ramadan. He said, “Whoever gives food for a fasting person to break his fast, he will have a reward like theirs, without that detracting from their reward in the slightest.”

Even a small act of charity can make a big difference in someone’s life and earn you immense rewards from Allah (SWT).

After finishing a meal during Ramadan, many families come together to recite duas as part of their nightly routine, teaching these important supplications to their kids. This sacred month provides an opportunity for both adults and children to grow spiritually while enjoying the blessings of shared meals.

Also, many parents also use online resources to find engaging Islamic content for their kids, helping them understand the significance of fasting, and the importance of giving zakat. Whether it’s teaching about charity or reciting Ramadan duas, the month strengthens bonds and reinforces core values within families.

duas for the last ten days of ramadan

As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, the anticipation and intensity of worship peak. The last ten days of Ramadan hold immense significance for Muslims worldwide, offering a unique opportunity for spiritual growth, forgiveness, and blessings.

Let’s find out what makes these final days unique and how to make the most of them through powerful duas (supplications).

What Are Duas For the Last 10 Days of Ramadan?

The last ten days of Ramadan refer to the final stretch of this blessed month. They are considered the most virtuous nights, surpassing even the first 20 days regarding spiritual rewards and blessings.

It’s a time for heightened devotion, seeking forgiveness, and making sincere dua to Allah SWT.

Why Are the Last 10 Days of Ramadan Important in Islam?

These final days carry immense weight in Islamic tradition for several reasons:

  • Laylatul Qadr, The Night of Power: One of these nights conceals Laylatul Qadr, a night more blessed than a thousand months. It’s the night the Quran was revealed, and good deeds performed on this night are multiplied exponentially.
  • Increased Reward: Every act of worship during these last ten days is rewarded more significantly than in other times of the year. It’s a chance to boost your spiritual standing and earn immense blessings from Allah SWT.
  • Forgiveness and Mercy: Allah SWT’s mercy, compassion, and blessings encircle those who earnestly seek forgiveness and sincerely worship during this time. The gates of Jannah (Paradise) are open wide, and the gates of Jahannam (Hell) are closed.

Laylatul Qadr, The Night of Power

Laylatul Qadr, or the Night of Power, is the most sacred in the Islamic calendar, concealed within the last ten days of Ramadan.

This night is described in the Quran as being “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3), emphasising its immense spiritual value. On this night, the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), marking a pivotal moment in Islamic history.

The blessings of Laylatul Qadr are unparallelled, as every good deed, prayer, and act of worship performed on this night is rewarded exponentially.

Muslims worldwide spend the night in prayer, recitation of the Quran, and reflection, hoping to capture the boundless mercy and blessings that Allah SWT shows upon those who seek Him on this holy night.

The exact date of Laylatul Qadr is unknown, adding to its mystique and encouraging Muslims to be extra vigilant in their worship during the last 10 nights.

It’s often believed to fall on one of the odd nights, particularly the 27th night of Ramadan.

What Are the Last 10 Days Referred To?

The last ten days of Ramadhan are sometimes called the ‘third Ashra’ or the ‘last ten nights of Ramadan.’

When Are the Last 10 Days of Ramadan in 2025?

While the dates depend on the lunar calendar, the last ten days of Ramadan in 2025 are expected to be on the 19th of March 2025 till 29th of March 2025 .
